Experience Bar: Factory Renovation
2024 French Design Awards Gold Winner
Collaborator: Yixin Geng
In Villa Zarri Srl, Castelmaggiore, Italy, Yinzhu Yao transformed an abandoned factory used for brewing beer into a vibrant, experiential bar. The renovation's focal point is a central staircase that divides the building into two halves, creating unique flows for different groups of visitors. This design reuses the space and allows patrons to witness parts of the beer-brewing process, enhancing their experience with interactive elements.
The renovation also serves local residents, adding convenience with new amenities such as restaurants and supermarkets. Inspired by the villa façade, the geometric elements create distinct spatial experiences, breathing new life into an otherwise forgotten industrial space. This project reflects a global challenge: how to rejuvenate abandoned spaces while integrating cultural significance into the local community.

This thread seamlessly connects architectural spaces, guiding visitors through curated paths that link historical relics with contemporary interpretations. The design introduces performance areas, exhibition spaces, and multipurpose rooms, all while maintaining minimal intervention to preserve ancient walls and relics. By integrating lightweight, detached structures, Yinzhu's design safeguards the authenticity of the site while enriching the visitor experience and connecting the past with the present.
